A simple conversation with the kid's.
Earlier today, I was talking with my fiance's daughter when I realized just how close we really are. It's very cool that I am not her step-dad, nor will I ever be that "title" and as such we have developed a really great friendship.
It's funny because I have almost become her confidant. Which sometimes get's my fiance a little jealous, her daughter talks tome more than her .... but isn't that usually the case? Most kid's and young adult's have a hard time speaking with their parent's as it seem's to be more of a chore.
Now don't get me wrong, they have a great relationship but the fact is most kids need someone to talk to that isn't as much of an authority figure.
I have the best of both world's. I get to be a friend, someone to talk to, I can keep up to date with any event's and rest easy, as my fiance does, that should the kid's ever have an issue that they don't want to talk with their parent's about, I am always available. Most parent's don't have this, myself included with my own daughter.
It's amazing what the power of conversation can do.
Be a good parent, ask question's and be interested, don't just act it.
And if they want to play video game's or watch the family channel instead, join them.
It might not make a big difference at the time, but it will over time.
