Orchids are renowned for being fragile and dainty little flowers and are often somewhat of a challenge to successfully cultivate. However, this doesn't mean to say growing them is impossible or even problematic; with the correct know-how and a little effort, even the novice gardener can produce orchids to be proud of.
You have three choices when to comes to growing orchids. You can cultivate them either indoors, outdoors or in a greenhouse. Find out below how to nurture the perfect orchid no matter which location you choose.
Indoors
Even though most homes lack humidity due to air conditioning and central heating, it's still possible to produce beautiful blooms. It just requires a little extra care and attention in order to simulate ideal growing conditions.
Some of the easiest orchids to grow indoors include Ladies Slippers, which have an exotic striped flower lasting up to three months and Moth Orchids, which are perhaps the simplest of all to grow indoors. These have beautiful blooms which appear twice yearly in a healthy, flourishing plant.
If you're planning on growing your orchids inside your home, you'll need a room or a windowsill that has plenty of bright natural light. However, direct sunlight should be avoided so if you're having difficulty finding the ideal location, you might like to use fluorescent lighting to create perfect indoor conditions.
The temperature in your chosen location should always be above 60F - even more during the daytime is ideal. Allow plenty of air to circulate the room by opening windows during hot spells or even by placing a fan nearby. This is vital to produce a healthy, thriving orchid.
Sufficient moisture is another crucial element when growing orchids and this can be obtained by standing your pots in a tray filled with gravel or pebbles containing around half an inch of water.
The Greenhouse
Orchids are adaptable little plants and will grow in a variety of conditions including cold or warm temperatures. However, optimal conditions will have a temperature of at least 15 degrees cooler at night than the warmer daytime climate. A good greenhouse will give the perfect environment in which to grow thriving, attractive blooms.
Sufficient air circulation is vital in your greenhouse and it's also important to get the lighting right, particularly if it's from an artificial source. Some orchids flourish in the shade while others much prefer brighter conditions, so ensure you find out which is best for the species you are growing.
In the heated conditions of a greenhouse, correct watering is vital. Any plants kept in the open will require more, particularly during peak summer months when the temperature is hot. Generally, orchids grown in a greenhouse will need watered at least once a week, if not twice. Check them regularly to ensure they have enough moisture.
Outdoors
Mild, damp locations are ideal for cultivating orchids and they will flourish all year round by attaching themselves to other plants and trees. Even with their exotic reputation, it's still possible to produce healthy, thriving plants in locations that experience winter. You can grow your orchids in pots, which can be taken indoors during the coldest spells or place the seedlings in the ground. With the correct care and attention, these adaptable little flowers will flourish no matter where you place them.
