The End of an Era. The End of a decade

As 2009 slowly ends and 2010 begins...well depending on where you are in the world. It is a time to reflect and be proud of what you have accomplished. Set some new goals perhaps. I don't do New Year's Resolutions ... not since I was very young simply because it is a novelty, it is nothing I ever took seriously. I set goals.

Granted it is sort of the same thing but the English language is tricky. The words we use determine the outcome in my opinion.

Any hoo I figured I would do a little list of some sites to help increase traffic and awareness for my blog and then I thought to myself, self...let's share it.

So here it is: Enjoy.

Great internet tips for 2010

For blogger's here are a few awesome things to use for 2010.

There is always social sites like :

Facebook and well...Facebook ....lol ...but there is also twitter and many more, have a look see:

Advogato        Free and open source software developers

Amie Street     Music

My Opera     Blogging, mobile blogging, sharing photos, connecting with friends. Global.

MouthShut.com     Social Network, social media, consumer reviews

Bebo     General.

Blogster     Blogging service that lets users "add friends" or establish business connections to their profiles.

Buzznet     Music and pop-culture

Eons.com     For baby boomers (huge market potential here folks)

Tumblr     General. Micro-blogging, RSS

Xanga     Blogs and "metro" areas

Xt3     Catholic social networking, created after World Youth Day 2008

Yelp, Inc.      Local Business Review and Talk

All in all these sites will certainly help you achieve several things.

The main thing you will find is more friends to network with, let's face it folks, the more business minded friends we have equals the greater our success(es) and the greater our action(s).

Obviously all of these sites will help you get a boost in traffic, which is nice, however there is a downside.

If you aren't proactive in keeping your profiles up to date or keeping yourself an active community member sooner than later people will stop paying close attention to you and trhat wonderful traffic will stop.

Build relationships and friendships and amazingly enough everything else simply falls into place.

But first...

Have a Happy and Safe New Year!

Happy New Year to each of you!

2010 is slowly upon us.

In the Spirit of friendship and goodwill here are a few (Irish) quotes from myself and my family to each of you and your's. May 2010 be your best year yet with many more to come.

In the New Year, may your right hand always be stretched out in friendship and never in want.

Here's to me, and here's to you,
And here's to love and laughter-
I'll be true as long as you,
And not one moment after.

May your glass be ever full.
May the roof over your head be always strong.
And may you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

Here's to you and yours, and to mine and ours.
And if mine and ours ever come across to you and yours,
I hope you and yours will do as much for mine and ours,
As mine and ours have done for you and yours!

OMG ... Too Funny. Possibly the funniest prank of all time!

Okay, a little bit of fun. I heard about this from a friend of mine and could not believe it was true. So I did some good old fashioned digging....I googled it lol.

For real this actually happened...read on.

A man goes on Christmas Holidays and comes home to hundreds, if not thousands of gifts wrapped all over his apartment. Normally, most people would love to come home from Holiday's to a nice gift or two...right?

In this case...WRONG!

It seems that this guy went away and left a spare key with a friend to keep an eye on his place whilst he was away....but the friend called two friends and so on and so on...lol...finally with himself and fifteen other friends and roughly eight hours of work the friends managed to wrap up everything in his apartment in Christmas wrapping..I mean they wrapped cushions, plates probably, even the beer in his fridge.

That is awful.....awfully funny.

Thank God he has a great sense of humour. He said: The great thing is when I unwrap something I find just what I was looking for"

Unbelievable.

Nope. Google it...it really happened.

Ya gotta love good friends!

Internet money making opportunities

Ah the New Year is upon us and so, sadly are the huge amounts of internet money making scams.

Folks, please be careful when looking at opportunities.

Check the history of the company.

Make sure it is a valid idea.

If you have gotten several ebooks or articles about an opportunity before then any new ones may just be rehashed garbage.

I know of several honest, hardworking webmasters out there with real and legitimate offers.

Leave a comment if you would like to know whom I personally trust and know will help you and not rip you off.

Internet money making opportunities are real, they do exist. Just do your homework first.

Christmas Midnight Mass:

For those of us who enjoy watching the Midnight Mass from the Vatican, this year we won't have to wait until midnight. The Vatican has decided to have the mass at 10 pm which will be served by Pope Benedict XVI to ease the burden of Holidays on the health of 82-year-old Pope.

You can watch the Live Stream by following this link.

For the kids, you can track Santa via this link.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Where is Santa Claus?

It's Christmas Eve. Have you been naughty or nice?

A wonderful Christmas poem to share with the kids tonight. Kids of all ages that is ;)

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

How my blog became an online turtle!

Maybe it is because of the month of December being busy...I am not sure, still it is no excuse to let my blog become an online turtle now is it?

I have been busy working with my "wife" and a few program type friends to come up with a new look for Need to Get Some. This change will be sometime in January 2010 and no later than the first week of February 2010.

Having said that I realized today whilst doing some check up work that my blog load time went from roughly 5 seconds to over 24 seconds.....YIKES.

I was going over my analytics when I noticed the problem. I found out that I was running a traffic script from awhile back and the script I had put in my HTML code actually caused my load time to drop like a mad hatter. Not impressive at all.

I would love to play the blame game here but the fact is that I didn't do my homework on the load time of this particular script and even worse I didn't test it the next day to ensure there were no problems.

I will not say the name because it is a great script, I simply configured it incorrectly. Problem solved....a little to late.

Since I made this error I have pretty much lost 80 percent of my organic traffic. I have a lot of work to do here.

Always check your HTML and your CSS coding.   If you aren't sure how to check your load time simply hop over to Pingdom. Pingdom offer's a great free service to check your website load time and more imprtantly they will keep a history of your results. Incredibly important so that you always no how well your site or blog is running.

Check out Pingdom's very effective Full Page Load Test by clicking here.

URI Valet is just scary, in a good way. It gives you load times, CSS and HTML validation...too much to mention. Check it out for an incredibly in depth check up of you blog. Try it out here.

A personal favorite is Web CEO. With both paid and free trial version. If you are really serious then this is definitely a useful tool. Go and download the free trial of it here

Today is the Winter Solstice and the birthday of the RCR

December 21. The beginning of winter, the longest day of the year and for me today holds a very important memory. The birthday of the RCR or The Royal Canadian Regiment. So, in honor of the Royals, specifically 2 RCR here is a brief history from the Royal Canadian Regiment website.

A Short History of The Royal Canadian Regiment

The Royal Canadian Regiment was formed on 21 December 1883 for the purpose of instructing the Canadian Militia. Shortly thereafter, it saw action for the first time during the campaign in North-West Canada in 1885 where it took part in the suppression of the rebellion at Batoche and Cut Knife Creek. In 1898, the Regiment provided part of the force sent to police the Yukon Territory during the Gold Rush.
In late 1899, with the outbreak of the Boer War, the Canadian Government offered Great Britain the services of 1,000 troops. Mobilization occurred rapidly and on 29 November the 2nd (Special Service) Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment of Infantry, under the command of LCol W.D. Otter arrived in Capetown, South Africa. After completing familiarization training at Belmont, it saw its first action at Sunnyside Kopjes on 1 January 1900. The most notable battle in which the Battalion was involved in was that at Paardeberg Drift where, with the British, it fought a numerically superior Boer force.
On 27 February 1900 General Cronje - the Boer Commander - surrendered to the Battalion, exactly 19 years after the disastrous British defeat at Majuba Hill. Of note, Pte R.R. Thompson was awarded The Queen's Scarf of Honour for his actions during the Battle of Paardeberg. Upon the completion of the one-year term of engagement, the Battalion returned home to Canada and was disbanded. During this same period, the 3rd (Special Service) Battalion was formed and tasked with garrisoning the Halifax Fortress from March 1900 to September 1902.
On 11 October 1901 in Toronto, Ontario, His Royal Highness, The Duke of Cornwall and York, later to be King George V, presented the Regiment its first set of Colours with the battle honours Saskatchewan, Northwest Canada 1885, Paardeberg and South Africa 1899-1900 emblazoned on it.

World War I

With the outbreak of WWI, the Regiment concentrated in Halifax where the Commanding Officer volunteered it as part of the first contingent for duty overseas. However, for political reasons, it was assigned garrison duties in Bermuda from 14 September 1914 to 12 August 1915. Subsequently, the Regiment was dispatched for overseas service on 26 August 1915, and after eight weeks of training in Camp Shorncliffe, England, was sent to the trenches at Ploegstreet, France, as part of the 1st Canadian Corps.
With the formation of the 3rd Canadian Division, the Regiment became part of the "Shiny 7th Brigade", along with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) and the 42nd and 49th Battalions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF). At the close of hostilities in 1918, the Regiment entered the city of Mons, Belgium, the first allied troops to do so since the British rearguard action known as the "Retreat from Mons" in 1914.
It is worth noting that on 27 October 1918, Lt Milton F. Gregg, MC, was awarded the Victoria Cross for most conspicuous bravery and initiative during operations near Cambrai from 27 September to 1 October 1918. By the end of the war the Regiment had incurred 712 killed and 2,354 wounded. To acknowledge the bravery of the Regiment, it was awarded 22 battle honours, 10 of which were emblazoned on the Regimental Colour

World War II

With rumblings of war in Europe, the Regiment was put on standby and by November 1939 was up to wartime establishment. From there it concentrated in Valcartier, Quebec along with the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment and the 48th Highlanders of Canada to form the 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade prior to departing for England.
Three years of training in the UK ensued before embarkation for its next theatre of operations. On 10 July 1943, the Regiment conducted an amphibious landing near Pachino, Sicily, where it fought a short campaign to its conclusion on 5 August. This was followed by another amphibious landing at Reggio de Calabria, Italy, on 3 September 1943 where the Regiment fought a mobile battle until being pulled back to Molice, on 23 October, to rest. On 1 December, as part of the 1st Canadian Infantry Division, the Regiment advanced northward toward Ortona for the bitter and costly fighting that was to take place over the next two months. On 24 May 1944, the Regiment, along with the 48th Highlanders of Canada, was instrumental in the defeat of the Hitler Line when they captured Pontecorvo. In September, the Regiment took part in the fight to relieve the Gothic Line, on the Adriatic coast.
After almost 18 months of continuous action, the Regiment left Italy in February 1945 to join in the final push to liberate Northwest Europe. There it fought its last battle when it liberated Apeldoorn, Holland, on 17 April 1945. From there the Regiment moved into a reserve position until VE Day. In five years and four months of overseas service, The Regiment suffered 370 killed and 1,207 wounded. For its actions, the Regiment was awarded 27 battle honours of which 10 are emblazoned on the Regimental Colour.

The Korean War

Following Canada's decision to provide an infantry brigade for the Korean conflict, the 2nd Battalion embarked on 20 April 1951 arriving at Pusan on 4 May. Three weeks later they met the enemy for the first time at Hill 407.
In February 1952 the 2nd Battalion was repatriated to Canada and replaced by the 1st Battalion who decisively engaged Chinese forces at the battle of Kowang San. In turn, the 3rd Battalion who took up its position in the Jamestown Line on Hill 187, one of the original positions of the 2nd Battalion, replaced 1RCR on 25 March 1953. There they participated in the last major engagement of the war on 2 May.
In May 1954, the 3rd Battalion returned to Canada and was disbanded on 21 July. The Korean conflict had cost the Regiment 117 killed and 401 wounded. For its participation, the Regiment was awarded the battle honour Korea 1951-1953.

Recent History

The year 1953 brought many changes to the Regimental organization. On 19 March the Regimental Depot was created at Wolseley Barracks, London, while the 2nd Battalion moved to Soest, West Germany, in October as a part of NATO Forces. On 8 December, His Royal Highness, The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh accepted the position of Colonel-in-Chief; an appointment he still retains.
In July 1954, the Regiment gained a Reserve unit designated The London and Oxford Fusiliers (3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment). In 1958, it was redesignated the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment (London and Oxford Fusiliers) with companies in London, Woodstock and Stratford. In 1970, due to a major reorganization of the Army, the Regiment regained a third Regular Force Battalion when the Regiment of Canadian Guards and The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment of Canada) were disbanded and their soldiers rebadged to The RCR. As a result, the militia Battalion was redesignated as the 4th Battalion, The RCR.
During the next twenty-five years, The Regiment rotated Regular Force Battalions through tours of duty in Germany and Cyprus fulfilling NATO and United Nations commitments respectively. In October 1970, the 1st Battalion was deployed to Ottawa in aid of the civil power during the FLQ Crisis with the 2nd and 3rd Battalions were involved in similar operations in Montreal. Commencing in 1972, the 3rd Battalion took over Canada's contribution to the Allied Command Europe Mobile Force (Land) which involved frequent exercises in north Norway and Denmark before the role was relinquished in 1975. In October 1976 the 3rd Battalion did its first tour of duty in Cyprus and, while there, was notified that it would move to Baden, West Germany, in the summer of 1977. In July 1977 the 1st Battalion, stationed in London, Ontario took over the role of Allied Command Europe Mobile Force (Land) from 1 PPCLI.
In 1983, the Regiment marked its centenary of service to the nation with numerous celebrations in the Maritimes and Ontario. In July, at the main Regimental reunion in London, Ontario, the Colonel-in-Chief, His Royal Highness, The Prince Philip reviewed and addressed the Regiment on parade during a trooping of the colours from all four Battalions, as well as, those of 3 (Airborne) Commando - the Regiment's affiliated unit in the Canadian Airborne Regiment.
In the spring of 1990, the 1st Battalion was deployed to Akwesasne, Ontario, in aid of the civil power. Later that year, the 2nd Battalion was similarly employed during the crisis at Oka and Kahnawake, Quebec. Also in 1990, "M" Company of the 3rd Battalion was deployed to Qatar in the Persian Gulf on Operation Desert Shield from October to December. "P" Company of the 3rd Battalion and "C" Company of the 1st Battalion served in the Gulf from January to March 1991 during Operation Desert Storm.
Battalions of the Regiment have participated in UN operations in the former Republic of Yugoslavia. Elements of the 3rd Battalion were instrumental in opening the Sarajevo airport in 1992 while the 2nd Battalion conducted both humanitarian assistance operations in Bosnia and peacekeeping duties in Macedonia. Shortly before the end of UNPROFOR mandate, the 1st Battalion conducted peacekeeping operations in southern Croatia.

As we approach 2010

It amazes me that 2010 is almost here. I can fondly remember dancing at a local club being young(er) and excited as we waited for the arrival of the notorious year 2000. Little did we know that it was to prove to be one of, if not the worst decades of my generations history.

There was only concerns about computer's crashing and the now somewhat infamous Y2K bug...remember that silly scare.

So we can cover the decade as it happened with the craziness surrounding it.

The Pope apologized for the wrongdoings of Catholic Church members, a sad state for the Church if ever there was one.

The September 11, 2001 attacks which we are still fighting today. I really don't understand why. It is my personal opinion that all we need to do is take all Nato member's and friendlies out of the area....and then send a clear message. They flew planes into the Trade Tower's and killed over 3,000 innocents, not soldiers fighting on a battlefield, it's time to end this war.

There was so much that went on during the past decade it is hard to fathom, since the majority of it was and still is bad. We will go into 2010 with world financial issues....war....hunger....all the bad things that life has to offer. Change is needed fast my friends. Very fast.

For a much more comprehensive list of the decade in review check out Thane Brunett's column over at the Toronto Sun website titled Notorious dates of the decade.

Please say a silent prayer for John Lennon

It's hard to believe that today, Dec 8 1980...we lost one of the most talented voices of our time. I think for my generation (30 ish) his death was the day our music died.

Rest in Peace John. You are remembered!

How to make a Christmas center piece.

How to make a Christmas center piece.

I was browsing through Walmart and Zeller's and a few other store's in the last hour and was quite literally shocked at the price of Christmas center piece's...in truth, not only were they over priced (in my opinion) they were also ugly. Not to Festive for my style.

So I thought hey, let's do a post on how to make a Christmas center piece. I have never done this myself, but when you live with a scrap booker and an incredibly creative woman (in this case ;)) you learn a few things.

So to do it takes about 30 minutes, not to time consuming at all.

Here is what you need for a Christmas center piece.

1 full length mirror, with or without gold frame, that depends on your theme.

At least two boxes of rock salt.

Between 12 and 24 medium sized round Christmas ornaments, if you don't know how to make those, we did a post on it the other day and you can read about it HERE

Also, dress it up a bit and add some small Christmas ornaments as well, the more the better.

Some flower's that are of the Festive style. Poinsettia's are the norm but hey, dress it up with your own personal touch.

Assorted white candles, red and green, any size will do...again chose them based on your own theme and personality.

1 Spool of gold or silver wired craft ribbon.

Place your mirror in center of table.

Place your candles on top of the mirror with the large one's in the most prominent place and work your way outwards.

Next is to pour the rock salt on the mirror.

Covering most, but not all of the base of the mirror.

Get creative with the salt, keeping it in a snowy theme around the outer part of the mirror.

Wrap the ribbon around some of the larger pillar candles and tie into a loose bow.

Scatter it creatively with the flower blooms.

Last step, jumble up the ornaments creatively and place them in a "hold" fashion and light your candles.

You now have a beautiful Christmas center piece and it won't cost you an arm and a leg.

Google Real-Time Search Provides Fresh Results

I was just reading a great article on Google's new real time search over at PC World and Harry McCracken, a self described Technologizer, I love that wrote a great post about it's cool new features. I love Google Goggles.

What are Google Goggles? Go and check out Harry's post here.

Full credit obviously goes to Harry and to comply with FTC rule, I am not getting anything in return. I don't know Harry, I just think it's a great article! Aren't we lucky....we get to do this all the time now instead of just sending a fellow website traffic.....I will bite my lip now.

Is your blog or website optimized for Bing?

Is your blog or website optimized for Bing?

We all know that Google is King of the internet. The Big "G" is the main place for search online. Having said that I think there are a few people out there in internet land that have completely walked away or shy away from Bing. Which is Microsoft's new search engine Bing. (I hope Microsoft doesn't mind me using the logo)

So why is Bing so important you ask? You know you did ;) Here is my personal take on the situation.

Bing, more importantly Microsoft has set the wheel's in motion for a partnership with Yahoo, and that is huge.

You see, more and more people are beginning to like the new feature's and cool way that Bing operates.

A few reason's are:

When you go to Bing, it is colorful and cheerful, it makes you smile. Don't believe me, then take a look at it.

Bing offer's a search history. I love this.

What is search history?

It simply allows you to click on Search History located at the left side of the screen, upper left side and then will return to your past searches, if you so desire. This option will show any the words/phrases you have searched for and more importantly the sites you may visited. The really cool part is that with a simple click you have the option to turn the search history on and off whenever you please.

Here are a couple of ways to help you get a higher listing in Bing:

1. For some reason, Bing loves older domain names. This is great for seasoned internet sites but a little harder for newbies. If you have a really new site then maybe you might want to consider buying an expired domain name. You can buy expired domain names from pretty much any reputable Domain Hosting Company out there. Just do a search.

2. Titles are important. The better the title the better chance of ranking, it is true that this is the case with all search engines but you probably will have a much better chance at ranking higher with the new Bing search engine for a specific keyword or tag than in Google. It just stands to reason.

3. Text actually matters, the more words you have on your site the more Bing will love you. I am not really sure why, it is what it is. Try for at least 500 or higher, personal thought.

4. Links are more favorable with Bing than they are with Google, especially outbound links....I can't see that lasting long however, use it while you can.

Final note:

The only thing with Bing that I don't like compared to Google is that Google has the "show options" and that is a very powerful tool for blogger's, when used properly.

All in all, I use them both depending on what I am looking for. No offense to Google but there are specific searches I would rather do on Bing, I have my reason's and I will not share them, sorry.

I love them both, just my thoughts on Bing.

Now, go and make sure your blog or website is properly optimized so you can use Bing to it's fullest.

Best

How to make Christmas Ornaments

In keeping with the Christmas Spirit and theme. This post will show you how to make Christmas Ornaments. The majority of ornaments on our tree are home made.

Here are my two favorite's.

The first one is a Christmas style winter show piece in a plastic container.

The items you will need are:

One 9 ounce (minimum)clear plastic take out cup
Some silver poster board
Crafting scissors
Cotton batting
A few miniature trees, store bought or home made, whichever is easier
A few Christmas style figurines.

A small mirror
Good craft glue
Glitter, I like the halloween glitter we have left over, saves me a trip to the store and spending money hehe.
Pins
Colorful beads
Filler, this one is up to you.

Okay, let's begin.

Instructions are fairly simple....yeah even I figured it out.

Trace the cup onto the underside of the poster board. Cut out the circle, but stay at least 1/8th of an inch outside of your line. This way the base is just a tad larger than the cup. Which is what we want.

Cut out a circle of batting snow the same diameter of the cup and place it on top of the shiny side of the poster board circle you outlined.

Get your batting in place where you'd like to position your trees, figurines, and mirror pond.

Then all you need to do is glue the base of each item onto your cut poster board and smooth the snow around to make it Christmasy.

Dash some glitter around the piece and you are almost done.

Then use the pushpin to poke a hole in the center of the bottom of the cup and thread a craft bead onto a 6 to 12-inch length of monofilament. Get the ends together, letting the bead fall to the center of the line, and thread them up through the hole from inside the cup. Add a few more beads and tie up a loop.

Finally, you need to apply glue along the edge of the circle. Press the cup, upside down, atop the glue and hold it in place until it dries, usually 30 seconds is enough to start getting tacky. Keep in mind though depending on the glue you use it could take a few minutes to a few hours.

The next home made Christmas Ornament I love making is the wishing spool.

This one is easy but the kids absolutely love it.

Things you need:

Some acrylic paint and brush
Any type of thread spool, wood works best I find
A marker or really strong pen
Strips of paper cut the width of the spool you are using
Double-sided tape
Red Ribbon (Christmas colors)
Label that is easy to stick on.

Here's how you do it.

Paint the spool and leave it to dry.

Get the kids to write their Christmas list on the strip's of paper.

Simply roll the paper around the empty spool and tack or tape it in place...let it fall for Santa to see ;)

Final step is to thread your ribbon through the center of your spool and tie a knot, so you can hang it. If you have several little tykes then make sure to write their name on the label and add it to the ribbon.

Done.

How to make home made Christmas cards

Well, my wife is an avid scrap booker for those of you who don't read regularly, and as a result....well....

Tis the Season and as she mentioned, there are alot of folks out there who need to say money for Christmas. On that note we are somewhat changing the theme and style of the blog for the next couple of weeks by posting tips for home made Christmas cards, gifts etc.

Keep checking back or better yet sign up for our feed. Enjoy the article.

How to make Christmas cards

Supplies you'll need:

1 piece 8-1/2" by 11" card, preferably colorful and stock type, not to thin.
1 piece 8-1/2" by 11" or 12" by 12" double sided pattern card
6 blue mini brads/mini eyelets/snowflake punchies
1 half-inch snowflake shaped brad/eyelet/punchie
Glue or liquid tape lol

Tools you'll need:

Word processor
Paper cutter and good cutting scissors
Hole punch
Free Adorable Font

Here is how you can make a home made Christmas card.

Open up Word on your PC.

Open word processor:

1. Start by setting the page to the landscape option, you find this in the File Options.

File -> Page Setup -> Paper Size ->Landscape.

2. Format the page with two columns.

Format -> Columns -> Two.

3. This is up to you but I strongly recommend that you set the bottom margin to 7". Simply slide the margins on the left and then insert a Text Box across the bottom center of the first column.

Insert -> Text Box.

4. Then type "Let it Snow!", in the Text Box. Once or twice, it's up to you. Do this in the Adorable font at size 20 and a Christmas color like color blue.

5. Change your line to 'No Line' by clicking on the line twice and setting Color -> No Line.

6. Copy text box and paste another one in the other column right at the bottom, that way you have two.

7. Check the print page set up and make sure the text boxes are in the right bottom corner in their columns, and once that is properly set up, Print it.

After you have printed your page all you have to do is cut the 8-1/2" by 11" sheet in half.

Voila!! Two cards.

Rinse and repeat!

What is rehabbing and how do I make money doing it.

Why is Rehabbing becoming so lucrative. It is truly a rinse and repeat business.

This topic is a bit of a stretch for me. I must say right upfront that when it comes to real estate make sure you do your homework. There is a lot to know.

I believe in evaluating several criteria before considering any real estate:

1. Is it in a good location? The most famous three words in real estate are location, location, location. If the area sucks and there is nothing of value around the home then chances are it is selling crazy cheap for those reason's alone. Although there are probably others ;) Dig and find out why.

2. If the home is a fixer upper is it worth the time and money? In other words if I pick the home up for $100,000 grand and it needs $30,000 in repairs and upgrades, will I be able to flip it for a minimum of $180,000.

Side note: always add in closing costs, taxes, all of your material and labor, etc, then tack on how much you want to pay yourself and that gives you the starting bid (at least that's my formula).

3. This one is tricky. I personally try to find homes that only need "cosmetic" help. You know a little "plastic" surgery as it were. Trust me on this, it is a heck of a lot easier to buy a run down home that needs a few band aids. Meaning, rip down some dry wall and put up new dry wall and paint. Simple cosmetics.

When you start finding mold everywhere and damages to the foundation etc, it becomes a headache. Don't get me wrong, they are still flippable....just a little longer process to fix up.

4. Final thing I try to find is repo's. I love repo's. It's funny how in my area there are lots....oddly enough no one knows how to find them. So, in Canada, at least here up Northern Ontario way, here are a few ways to find repo's. First off, the dead ringer is the little white paper in the window that says this house is under surveillance. Bang. Repo. Another way is to look at the realtor name, seriously, if it is a realtor from Toronto or B.C. it is definitely a repo. and the third, most obvious way that is always overlooked. Go to your local mortgage center and ask. These guys want the properties sold fast and usually at a great deal, it's only after the banks grab them that they go way up in price. A friend of mine got a $176,000 home through the local mortgage center for $12,000! He paid the back taxes and walked away, he asked when the bank was going to take over the home and was told in less than a week at which point the home would have went up on market for a minimum of $190,000. Bankers are the biggest crooks on the planet, in my opinion. Hey that's why the world needed a bail out.....off topic, sorry.

5. Okay, sorry....final, final item. More of a personal note. Before you flip or rehab, get some education first. Make sure you take an accredited course locally. Don't get one of those "Learn to flip...." crap things online. Useless junk.

With the economy the way it is people are looking for safety, safety for retirement plans. Planning ahead. This is the exact reason that rehabbing is still thriving and attracting investors. If you get in the right market, right now, you may very well be positioning yourself for becoming very wealthy in ten to fifteen years. It is a very real possibility.

If you don't have the start up money and your credit is gone or less than good enough then figure out a way to come up with some start up capital. A great formula is called "Gun to the head".

It is one of the oldest ways to make money, it is a great motivator, and it works.

"Gun to the head" is just that. You are given 24 hours to come up with $1,000 cash. You must do this legally, ethically and honestly or the gun (metaphorically)goes off.

It is amazing what you can do when your life is on the line. Pretend you are in that exact scenario. "Gun to the head" and you will definitely find a way.

The time really is now since property prices are still down. For smart investors, this means a chance to buy more properties with less cash. It's a chance to save on the capital. So, to quote ING. Go ahead...Save your Money.

If you are one of my American reader's and need some help check out my friend Kristi's page "Cirtwill Investments, Inc." She has been flipping for a few years now and is incredibly knowledgeable on the subject.

For my Canadian reader's send me an email and I will get you in touch with a friend of mine who doesn't believe in websites but makes mad cash flipping.

How to make a gift box from a cereal box!

Earlier today my better half, lol, was looking for a way to make a gift box. We found a few really good idea's but didn't have the right types of boxes or cardboard.

She was just about to give up when we found a really cool article on how to make a gift box with a cereal box. Now, having a family of four (plus the pooch) we have an endless supply of cereal boxes on hand.

I emailed the author of the post and they were generous enough to allow me to share the steps with you.

Normally I would simply cut and paste the article with the appropriate signature box and I almost did with this article.

However, the site has so much awesome information that I feel I should simply point you to the site itself.

It's worth a look as it has a lot of information, including an online community and articles and loads of great information other than how to make a gift box.

So, if you want to save a bit of money on Christmas wrapping or if you want to add a personal touch to your gift wrapping here is the place to go.

I hope you find the article and site as informative as I have.

By the way, make sure to add it to your bookmarks also.

Here is the article:

Ignorance of the new FTC guidelines could cost you alot of money in fines!

Are you familiar with the New FTC Guidelines?

I have received several emails on this topic today so I figured I had better do up a post about it for anyone not familiar with this.

If you aren't you could potentially get yourself in a lot of HOT water.

Some of these fines (if you are actually violating these guidelines) can go up to $11,000.

You might want to keep reading this one and take notes.

The new laws came into effect on December 1, 2009.

The FTC guidelines are mainly concerning product endorsements and or testimonials. For those of us who make a living online through affiliate links etc, this is something we must...let me repeat that WE MUST be aware of.

It includes bloggers, website owners, social media experts. (Yes, even Social Media is effected). What it all boils down to is that if you promote products and make money doing this then you have to let your potential customer aware of this fact. In English, you need to put verbage to the effect of "Hey, thanks for buying this and if you do I will make money from it or I will get a new car etc, etc..." You get the idea.

It also puts testimonials into a more honest and real perspective, at least to me. In the good old days of internet marketing, you could put up a testimonial that someone made a gazillion dollars by using a product and then throw in a screen shot of a check, it was a bad practice. I never used it and never endorsed that way of a testimonial because it was obviously B.S.

No one (that I know at least) ever made a million in a month just getting started. I do know of some folks who did it in a few months. More importantly they did it legitimately and without some useless testimonial or an obviously photo shopped check. Ever notice a check always had the pertinent info blanked out? It was done like that for a reason, we only see the amount of money on the check.

I personally love the new testimonial rules. If I write a testimonial for someone it is because that person has worked for me. Not because I liked a product I never used. SO that aspect is cool and very beneficial to newbie blogger's etc. They can't as easily get drawn in so to speak, sadly many still will. Been there, done that.

You can get more information on the guidelines by following this link. I recommend that you go check them out and learn them because they really are the new Bible of rules.

This is the FTC after all and it makes for more honest business practices which can only improve your customer base.

If you have any questions or answer's take a gander over to at Blogging Rules Draw Online Protests.

I know I will be going over the new guidelines for the next few weeks and it might be in your best interest(s) to do the same.

Thanks to all of my personal contacts who sent me this information.

Please retweet or stumble this post, I would appreciate it.
